Arsenal vs Newcastle United Match Preview
Arsenal have a favourable run-in as they try to end two seasons without Champions League football and should consolidate their top-four spot by beating Newcastle.
The Gunners remain something of an enigma under manager Unai Emery, who has adopted a somewhat unorthodox approach to the task of replacing Arsene Wenger in terms of his team selections, but by the end of this campaign they may just have taken a definite step forward.
Going into the weekend, Arsenal were favourites to beat Manchester United and Chelsea for a top-four finish. They could even yet pip their arch-rivals Tottenham to third position, and one reason why the bookmakers like their chances so much has to be that they will not face another top-six club within their concluding eight Premier League games.
Of course, Emery’s side could also win the Europa League and return to its more prestigious ‘big brother’ that way, with a quarter-final tie against Napoli to come.
Newcastle, meanwhile, have been on a good run of form since mid-January which means they are now extremely unlikely to be relegated.
However, the defensive solidity the Magpies had been showing has eluded them in their last few games, being involved in a couple of thrillers against Everton and Bournemouth, and while they may not be disgraced here they will probably head back north empty-handed.
