Arsenal vs Brighton Match Preview
Freddie Ljungberg takes charge of his first Arsenal home match knowing that if their eight-game winless run continues, it will seriously harm his chances of becoming the permanent manager.
The Swede failed to stop the rot with a sixth draw in eight games at Norwich on Sunday, visibly frustrated at the final whistle after his decision to restore Shkodran Mustafi to the Premier League starting line-up did not pay off in a 2-2 stalemate – while £72million signing Nicolas Pepe again remained on the bench.
Even with Unai Emery having now exited, there is still a lack of clarity about the Gunners’ direction and Ljungberg needs victories quickly if he is to prevent the board from moving for a Brendan Rodgers, Max Allegri or Mikel Arteta to steer the club onto a new course.
It will not be easy against Brighton, whom Arsenal have not beaten in their last three meetings and at least have guaranteed themselves some stability by pinning down their manager Graham Potter on a staggering new six-year contract only months after his arrival.
This completes a tough run of fixtures for the Seagulls, who have dropped down the table after three straight defeats, although they had a real go against 10-man runaway leaders Liverpool on Saturday before losing narrowly.
With Arsenal on the ropes if not in disarray, Brighton are entitled to fancy their chances here and may just speed up their opponents’ managerial decision process by holding them to yet another agonising draw.
