Arsenal vs Bayern Munich Match Preview
Almost two years to the day since their International Champions Cup meeting in Shanghai, Arsenal and Bayern Munich face each other again in the match that really launches the 2019 edition of the competition.
This pre-season tournament has been condensed this year with fewer teams and matches, possibly because it had become a bit unwieldy, and Tuesday’s opening contest between Fiorentina and Mexican club Guadalajara in Chicago was something of a low-key start.
But Arsenal vs Bayern is a proper draw for Californian football supporters and the Gunners will be hoping for a finish as strong as the one they enjoyed against their German rivals in July 2017, when Alex Iwobi equalised four minutes into stoppage time and they won the resulting penalty shootout.
Arsenal certainly made an excellent start to their American tour on Monday. Manager Unai Emery fielded a very young team against Colorado Rapids, resting many senior players for the Bayern test, and they won 3-0 with new teenage Brazilian forward signing Gabriel Martinelli scoring on his debut.
For Bayern, this is their initial match practice and while they have said goodbye to some decorated veterans this summer in Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and Mats Hummels, they have introduced new blood to their squad in Benjamin Pavard, Lucas Hernandez and Jann-Fiete Arp.
Given that Emery’s team here will be vastly different to the one he named on Monday, it cannot really be said that Arsenal have a fitness advantage and so we are backing Bayern’s greater quality to count in Los Angeles.
