Argentina vs Uruguay Match Preview

After beating Brazil in Saudi Arabia on Friday, Argentina have crossed the border into Israel to face another of their big South American rivals in a match that had been in doubt due to security fears.

The Albiceleste won 1-0 in Riyadh with a goal from Lionel Messi on his return to international duty following a three-month suspension incurred when he levelled corruption allegations at the Copa America – ironically hosted by, and won by, Brazil.

But an appearance by arguably the world’s greatest ever footballer, and team-mates such as Sergio Aguero and Paulo Dybala plus Uruguay stars Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, in Tel Aviv was under threat a few days ago due to ongoing political tensions in the Middle East that sparked a recent rocket attack.

However, the match does go ahead and Messi, who played the full 90 minutes on Friday, will be potentially up against his Barcelona team-mate Suarez, with the Uruguayan having played only the first half of his country’s 2-1 victory in Hungary the same evening.

It was left to Cavani and Los Angeles FC youngster Brian Rodriguez to score the Uruguay goals as they stretched their unbeaten record in 2019 to 12 matches, having only exited the Copa America on penalties in the quarter-finals.

Although Argentina now appear to be progressing under rookie manager Lionel Scaloni, they could be vulnerable against Uruguay with Messi likely to be used sparingly after Friday’s 90 minutes and an upset may just be on the cards.
