Argentina vs Mexico Match Preview
Gerardo Martino will try to show Argentina what they are missing when his in-form Mexico side take on his home country in this Texas friendly.
Martino, 56, who led Paraguay to the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals, had one season in charge of Barcelona but after failing to win any of the biggest three trophies, he quit to become head coach of the Argentina national team in the summer of 2014.
In back-to-back Copa Americas, the Albiceleste twice lost the final on penalties to Chile and then Martino again resigned, believed to be unhappy with the Argentine FA. He then won the MLS Cup with Atlanta United before taking charge of Mexico in January of this year.
Already, Martino has been successful. He steered El Tri to the CONCACAF Gold Cup title this summer and his winning ratio is superb, 10 out of 11, most recently a 3-0 success against the United States in New Jersey last Friday.
Argentina, meanwhile, continue to have Lionel Scaloni at the helm, but his reign so far has been fairly underwhelming with a third-place finish at this year’s Copa America followed by a 0-0 draw against Chile in Los Angeles on Friday.
Lionel Messi is currently suspended for accusing CONMEBOL of corruption during the Copa America and it is distinctly a second-string squad that Scaloni has with him in the USA.
In contrast, Mexico are much closer to full strength and although their record when facing Argentina is not strong (see above) they may well be capable of showcasing their manager’s talents by claiming a draw against his compatriots.
