Andorra vs Iceland Match Preview

Iceland start their campaign to qualify for a third major tournament in a row with the feelgood factor of their 2016 European Championship exploits having decidedly worn off.

The North Atlantic islanders, who knocked out England on their way to the Euro 2016 quarter-finals, also competed at last summer’s World Cup but made little impact, collecting only one point from their three matches in a difficult group.

Since then, they have extended their winless run to 14 games in being relegated from the top tier of the UEFA Nations League and find themselves battling with France, Turkey and Albania for the two places available from Group H at next year’s European Championship.

Also in that pool, but surely only making up the numbers, are Moldova and Andorra, although it must be said that the latter-named Pyrenean nation appear to be improving significantly compared to where they were a few years ago.

No longer complete pushovers, Andorra have drawn their last five home games and even registered an away victory in a friendly against Liechtenstein a year ago.

However, this fixture does represent a step up in class from the level of opposition Andorra were facing in the bottom division of the Nations League and so Iceland are expected to end their victory drought – though not by such an emphatic scoreline, perhaps something like 2-0.
