Albania vs France Match Preview

France made incredibly hard work of beating Moldova on Thursday – and manager Didier Deschamps will want to see his world champions put Albania to the sword at their brand-new stadium in response.

At the Stade de France, Les Bleus, with what looked as strong a team as they could field, remarkably found themselves trailing from the ninth minute to the 35th against their lowly-ranked opponents when captain Raphael Varane equalised.

It took France even longer to force a winner, that not arriving until the 79th minute when Everton left-back Lucas Digne was scythed down in the penalty area for a blatant spot-kick and Olivier Giroud, who played 90 minutes despite not having done so for Chelsea this season, fired it home.

At least the World Cup holders moved two points ahead of Turkey at the top of Euro 2020 Qualifying Group H with both teams now having qualified at the expense of Iceland, who drew 0-0 in Istanbul.

Albania, meanwhile, have been eliminated from contention to reach next summer’s tournament as they cannot make it through to the play-offs and they also suffered their own type of humiliation on Thursday, held 2-2 at home by Andorra who normally struggle to score even one goal!

Deschamps may ring the changes here and give chances to some of those who were left watching Thursday’s struggles from the bench, and he is backed to gain the right reaction from his squad with a routine victory in the curtain-raiser at this new Tirana venue.
