Alaves’ surprising challenge for a La Liga top-four place has come off the rails recently, but they are fancied to get back on track when they host Levante.

The Basque club, who are perhaps still most famous for contesting a thrilling 2001 UEFA Cup Final against Liverpool, had been threatening until a few weeks ago to gatecrash the Champions League party for next term.

But three consecutive defeats to nil have meant the Babazorros slipping down the table to seventh position after 22 rounds of matches as Sevilla moved into a clear fourth ahead of Getafe and Real Betis.

However, this looks a great opportunity for Abelardo’s side to end their barren run and boost their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Europa League.

That is because Levante, who are five points behind Alaves, have failed to score in four of their last five matches including three defeats away from home, albeit they were against three of the top four in Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla.

Paco Lopez’s side did enjoy a magnificent 2-1 victory at Real Madrid in October, but that was their most recent success on the road and they are winless in eight on their travels since.

Although Alaves have gone off the boil, their 1-0 loss at home to Rayo Vallecano two weeks ago was their first defeat on their own pitch this term and they are backed to show the setback was only temporary.
