Ajax vs Valencia Match Preview
Valencia will know they realistically need to win in Amsterdam if they are to qualify for the Champions League group stage – but they are expected to come up short.
To all intents and purposes, this is a winner-takes-all game, although Ajax will not see it like that. A draw would be good enough to send last season’s semi-finalists through, while a victory secures top spot in Group H.
Both of these teams need to assume Chelsea will win at home to eliminated Lille, which is a 2/9 chance, thereby taking care of their own qualification business. In that event, it then comes down to whether Valencia can cause an upset at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
The portents are not promising for Los Che based on the reverse fixture, with Ajax running out 3-0 winners at the Mestalla. But that was Valencia’s only defeat of the campaign and they really should have completed the double over Chelsea last time out when they missed a host of chances to do better than their 2-2 home draw.
Encouragingly for the Spanish side, their recent domestic form has been strong whereas Ajax suffered a hugely surprising 2-0 defeat at home to Willem II on Friday.
Unbeaten on the road in Europe this term, Valencia may just be able to retain that record with a draw – while having to content themselves with a place in the last 32 of the Europa League.
