AFC Wimbledon vs MK Dons Match Preview
Two fierce rivals, who are back in League One together this season, renew hostilities in the Carabao Cup first round and MK Dons are carrying our money to progress.
MK Dons are essentially the ‘franchise’ of the original Wimbledon club, famous for being the Crazy Gang crew of Vinnie Jones et al who stunned Liverpool in the 1988 FA Cup Final, and they became hated by their south London fanbase when they were moved 45 miles north of the capital to Milton Keynes in 2003.
As a counter-move, a new Wimbledon club with the AFC prefix and the traditions of their original existence was founded. They fought their way up the football pyramid and now sit in League One alongside MK Dons, who were promoted back up to that level last season.
Tensions are sure to run high before and during this tie, which is only the second match of the season for MK Dons as their scheduled season-opener against Bury was postponed due to the financial troubles of the Lancashire club. Paul Tisdale’s side therefore began their campaign at home to Shrewsbury Town on Saturday (result not known at the time of writing).
AFC Wimbledon, meanwhile, lost 2-1 at home to Rotherham before travelling up to Fleetwood and will hope to rediscover their excellent form of the end of last season under manager Wally Downes which enabled them to escape relegation against all expectations.
The bookmakers feel MK Dons are the better team judging by their League One odds for the season and having had longer to get themselves fully prepared due to that postponement of their opening game, they are fancied to edge through on this trip to Kingston-upon-Thames.
