AFC Wimbledon v West Ham Match Preview

AFC Wimbledon’s chances of remaining in League One this season appear to be slowly sliding away. The Dons were promoted to the third tier two seasons ago for the first time since their rebirth as a club but as they continue to look to fund their own ground back near their spiritual home of Plough Lane, funds to bring the squad up to scratch have been minimal and as such it’s not too much of a surprise to see the Londoners sitting in bottom place in the League One table as things stand.

As a result of this poor showing so far in this campaign it came as no surprise to see Neal Ardley sacked as manager earlier in the campaign and replaced by another former player in the shape of Wally Downes, but the 57 year old has not yet been able to produce any better form from the team and the gap between AFC and 20th placed Rochdale in the final safe spot has now stretched to 8 points. Can they upset all the odds to enjoy a famous cup win here at 6/1 with Coral.

West Ham United were hoping to begin a new era this year under the guidance of a former Premier League winning manager in Manuel Pellegrini and they have certainly been better at times than they were under their two previous managers Slaven Bilic and David Moyes. As has almost always been the case in the top tier for the Hammers though, they’ve struggled for consistency so far this season and as a result sit in 10th place in a packed midtable with 23 games on the board.

After a surprise win over Arsenal, Pellegrini’s men slipped to a disappointing defeat at Bournemouth last weekend and they may now be looking at the FA Cup as something of a season-saver, given that European qualification through a high league finish now seems unlikely. Having been knocked out by a League One side in promotion-winning Wigan last year, we can’t see them taking the Dons lightly here so the away win seems the most likely outcome to us as well as the bookies at 1/2 with Unibet.

Pellegrini always took the cup competitions seriously during his time with Manchester City and given that his side’s chances of a top six finish are out of the question, he may be turning to the FA Cup as not only a chance at silverware but also a potential route into the Europa League next season. Even should the Hammers rotate here they should have more than enough attacking quality to put an out-of-sorts AFC Wimbledon side to the sword so we’re backing the visitors with a one goal handicap at 13/10 with William Hill.
