Accrington Stanley vs Sunderland Match Preview
Accrington Stanley have enjoyed an uninterrupted build-up to this tie, but it may not prevent them from making an early Carabao Cup exit against Sunderland.
Not that they probably needed it with the season only just getting going, but Stanley had the weekend off as their League One match against Bury was postponed due to their Lancashire rivals’ financial woes – and it may not be played at all if the Shakers are kicked out of the League on D-day of August 23.
It means there is no reason for Accrington manager John Coleman not to play a full-strength team against Sunderland, albeit he may want to make changes after his side were clear second best in their opening league game away to Lincoln which they lost 2-0.
Sunderland, meanwhile, were held 1-1 at home by Oxford on the opening weekend and travel to the Wham Stadium having visited fellow promotion hopefuls Ipswich on Saturday (result not known at the time of writing).
The Black Cats should be confident as they won 3-0 at this venue on their only previous visit in April and since then, Accrington have levelled and re-laid their pitch which had become a difficult surface on which to play passing football.
It should be like a billiard table now for this first home game of the season for Accrington, but their third-tier rivals from Wearside look a superior team and are backed to make up for last season’s first-hurdle exit against Sheffield Wednesday in this competition.
