Finals Series & Grand Final tips

Unlike European football, the A-League features an end of season play-off. The Finals Series playoffs winner is the season champion, while the winner of the league is the premier. These knockout games add an extra level of excitement to the end of the season.

History of the A-League

The A-League is a relatively new league format, having kicked off in 2004. Prior to that, Australia’s premier division was the National Soccer League (NSL). The NSL was established in 1977 as a response to the spike in the sport’s popularity following Australia’s first-ever appearance at the World Cup in 1974.

Back then, 14 teams took part. However, a lack of financial backing from funders and sponsors meant that the Australian teams couldn’t draw in talent like the established outfits in Europe. Many of the nation’s best players left Australian to pursue more glittering careers abroad.

In 2003, after years of next-to-no investment, the NSL was ditched in favour of a new, smaller competition. Eight teams from across Australia and New Zealand entered the newly formed A-League. Adelaide United were crowned inaugural winners in 2005 and since then the league has moved from strength to strength. Today, 11 teams contest for the title – and further entries are already confirmed for the coming seasons.
