History of the Eliteserien
Norway’s top division has only borne the moniker of Eliteserien since 2017, though football league history in the Nordic nation stretches back to the 1930s. The Norgesserien brought regional teams and local leagues together under one tournament in 1937, with teams across the country competing first in qualifying groups, before entering a knockout round ahead of a nationwide final. The town of Fredrikstad were the first inaugural winners, besting Lyn of Oslo over a two-legged tie.
In the years after WWII, the league was revamped once more. Dubbed the Hovedserien, the new league brought the best teams together as two regional groups. It wasn’t until the early 60s that the two localised competitions merged into one nationwide league – 1. Divisjon.
The top division expanded over the later decades of the 20th century, until reaching its current total of 16 teams. The latter years of the 20th century was dominated by a select few outfits. Lillestrøm won multiple titles, as did Brann of Bergen and the hugely successful Rosenborg. The league changed name once more in 1990, becoming the Tippeligaen, named after the National Lottery league sponsors. The usual suspects were joined by Molde at the top of the table.
In 2016, the Tippeligaen changed name once more to its current iteration, the Eliteserien.
