History of the Champions League

The Champions League, Europe’s premier club tournament, has existed in its current format since 1993. However, the history of European knockout football stretches back much further.

The first continental European Cup kicked off in 1956. Though teams from neighbouring nations had faced off before, the tournament represented the first shot at a European-wide competition in the post-war period.

Those early years were dominated by a star-studded Real Madrid, with the Spanish giants winning the first five tournaments. In the years that followed, the Cup was passed between dominant eras from European nations – the Portuguese with Benfica, the mighty AC Milan of Italy, and the ‘total football’ approach made famous by teams from the Netherlands.

At the beginning of the 1992/93 season, the European Cup became the Champions League. It was rebranded by UEFA alongside a new TV rights deal. French side Marseille were its first winners.

The Champions League has gone from strength to strength ever since, drawing in a global audience of billions and attracting the world’s best players.
