England will begin their Group G campaign at the 2018 World Cup with a match against Tunisia on Monday June 18.

This is the first of three group fixtures for the Three Lions, who will also face Panama and Belgium in their quest to be among the 16 teams from the eight round-robin pools that qualify for the knockout stage.

Tunisia vs England head-to-head stats

  • June 15 1998, World Cup, Marseille
  • England 2-0 Tunisia
As in 2018, England kicked off the World Cup against Tunisia and they made the ideal start, winning with a goal in each half from Alan Shearer and Paul Scholes
  • June 2 1990, friendly match, Tunis
  • Tunisia 1-1 England
In preparation for the World Cup where they played Egypt, England scored a late equaliser through substitute Steve Bull after Tunisia had taken the lead with an opportunist strike

Tunisia vs England quotes

This ought to be a straightforward opener for England as they are hot favourites to beat the North Africans, who have only a smattering of players operating at the highest level of European football.

England manager Gareth Southgate played against Tunisia at the 1998 World Cup and described the victory as “one of the best days of my football life” – and repeating that triumph in Russia would surely be right up there with it.

“It was a fantastic occasion and a game which has stayed in my memory for a good few years,” said Southgate.
“Everyone knows we will be favourites to win this match and we have to live with that.”

Tunisia vs England predicted line-ups

As a good start to the tournament will be so important, the strongest possible England line-up is expected and if everyone is available then Harry Kane will be confident of increasing his international goals tally.

Kane and his current and former Tottenham Hotspur team-mates Dele Alli, Eric Dier - if he is preferred over Jordan Henderson as the midfield 'pivot' - Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker should comprise almost half of the England side, while the latter’s Manchester City colleagues Raheem Sterling and John Stones are others Southgate is sure to rely upon.

Tunisia are likely to deploy Syam Ben Youssef, who had a spell with Leyton Orient in 2012, to mark Kane, while at the other end of the pitch they will hope Anice Badri, Saber Khalifa and Wahbi Khazri - still officially a Sunderland player - can cause problems for the England defence…and also whichever goalkeeper Southgate decides is his first choice with Jordan Pickford likely to get the nod over Jack Butland.

Tunisia vs England odds

Tunisia vs England betting tips

It would perhaps be unwise to expect an emphatic England victory and something of the nature of the 2-0 success they enjoyed 20 years ago against Tunisia would be considered a very satisfactory start to the campaign.

That correct score can be backed at 5/1 with BetStars, while other wagers well worth considering are England -1 on the handicap at 15/13 with BetBright, England to win and under 3.5 goals in the match at 20/23 (Coral) and England to win to nil at Evens (BetVictor).

Tunisia vs England recommended bets

England to win and under 3.5 goals in the match at 17/20 with Coral
England to win to nil at Evens with BetVictor
