Switzerland vs Northern Ireland predictions for their World Cup play-off second leg in Basel on Sunday. The Swiss lead 1-0 on aggregate after the first match. Read on for our free predictions and betting tips.

Northern Ireland can count themselves unfortunate to be trailing in the tie going into this match, but they are expected to produce a typically spirited display in Basel.

Michael O’Neill’s side are only behind to a highly controversial penalty awarded when Corry Evans turned away from a Xherdan Shaqiri shot with his arms tucked in and the ball struck him around the shoulder area, with referee Ovidiu Hategan adjudging it to be handball.

AC Milan left-back Ricardo Rodriguez tucked away the spot-kick and even Shaqiri admitted he had been “surprised” to see the penalty given, while Evans’ misery was compounded by the fact that the booking he incurred means he is suspended for Sunday’s return match.

Shaqiri also offered an accurate analysis of the game in Belfast and a plausible prediction of what is likely to happen at St Jakob-Park, the Stoke City winger saying:

“I think Northern Ireland didn't do enough to score because we played very well. We kept the ball for 90 minutes and had more possession. We tried to create more chances and in the end we deserved to win.
“They took a lot of points at home in their group, so it will be very difficult to come to Basel and play more offensively than they did. They need to score to try and qualify. When they try to play offensively it will be more open for us to score. They have to play more offensively.”

It would be premature to discount the Irish’s chances of still progressing to Russia 2018 because they have confounded their doubters time and again over the last few years, although it is tempting to feel they needed to be level at least after the Windsor Park match.

Plus, no European team has ever advanced through the World Cup play-offs after losing the first leg at home, so the Swiss are very much in the box seat, but odds of bigger than 6/4 for Northern Ireland not to lose again look worth taking as they will again keep things very tight.
