  • Switzerland meanwhile have won ten matches on the bounce
  • The reverse fixture finished in a 2-0 win to El Nati last September

Portugal v Switzerland betting preview

Portugal finally secured their first ever major international silverware last summer by lifting the European Championships in France - despite failing to win a group stage game and going through as one of the best-placed 3rd finishing teams. Now, the aim will be to secure the Seleccao's first ever World Cup in Russia next summer, but first they have to confirm their progression to the next round.

After losing their opening game to Switzerland, Cristiano Ronaldo and co have been confident and comfortable in this qualifying section, winning eight consecutive matches to keep themselves within touching distance of the top spot. As things stand, a win here at odds of 4/6 with William Hill would see them top the group but anything less than that and they'll have to settle for a place in the play-offs.

It seems almost unfair that Switzerland could still fail to qualify for next summer's World Cup given how strong they've been in this particular qualifying section. The group has been dominated by El Nati, with Portugal in second place throughout as the Swiss side has won all nine of it's qualifying matches - but with just three points separating the two sides this group is not yet completely over.

A home win in this game would see Portugal pip Switzerland to the post for top spot and Vladimir Petkovic's men have to settle for a play-off position. Given how confidently they've been playing of late, they'll fancy their chances of an away win here at 5/1 with Betfred, although knowing that a draw would be enough don't be surprised to see them sit deep and look to frustrate Portugal's talented attack.

If Portugal do get the goal, Switzerland will have to come forward and in players like Breel Embolo and Haris Seferovic, they have the talent to cause the hosts' sometimes shaky backline problems. The Seleccao have the home advantage and are favourites for a reason, but there have been some high-scoring games involving these sides of late and we fancy goals here. Portugal to win and both teams to score is priced at 3/1 with William Hill.

Cristiano Ronaldo has unsurprisingly been one of the top scorers in the whole of European qualifying, racking up no fewer than 15 goals in nine matches - just one less than Poland's Robert Lewandowski. You can expect the Real Madrid superstar to get on the scoresheet in this game as he often does for his country at odds of  3/4 with Ladbrokes and at least equal the Bayern Munich man in the top scoring charts.

Recommended bets:
Portugal to win and both teams to score @ 3/1 with William Hill
Cristiano Ronaldo to score at any time @ 3/4 with Ladbrokes
