Croatia look to have done the hard work in this tie and it will be all about staying solid when they visit Piraeus for the second leg.

Zlatko Dalic’s side built up a big advantage for their trip to Greece when they raced clear in the first half at the Maksimir Stadium in Zagreb, Luka Modric setting them on their way from the penalty spot before Nikola Kalinic and Ivan Perisic added further goals before the interval.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos had ensured the lead was only 3-1 at the break, but Andrej Kramaric extended the margin early in the second period which meant that if the tie is not quite out of sight for Greece, it will require a herculean effort for them to get back into it.

In theory it should be a fairly comfortable night for the national team nicknamed the Blazers when they visit the Karaiskakis Stadium a few miles from Athens, but away teams rarely have it easy there whether facing Greece or Olympiakos who recently held Barcelona to a 0-0 draw in the Champions League.

Essentially, the main aim for Croatia will be to ensure they are not on the receiving end of an early onslaught such as the one they imposed on the Greeks in the first match, so much will depend on Dejan Lovren and Domagoj Vida standing firm in the heart of the defence.

Greece coach Michael Skibbe, meanwhile, will know he has to go for broke if his side are to sustain any hope deep into this game of reaching Russia, and he may choose to field Dimitrios Diamantakos or Anastasios Bakasetas as a second striker alongside Kostas Mitroglou.

However, it looks very much as though the 2004 European champions have given themselves far too much to do and in front of what is sure to be a passionate home crowd, a draw on the night may be the best Greece can hope for.
