England continue their Group G campaign at the 2018 World Cup by facing Panama in their second match on Sunday June 24.

This is the middle fixture of three for Gareth Southgate’s side, who also take on Tunisia and Belgium in their quest to be among the 16 teams from the eight round-robin pools that qualify for the knockout stage.

This should be a similar test to the Tunisia game for England in terms of its level of difficulty if not necessarily the style of the match, although Panama represent a complete unknown quantity as the Three Lions have never played them before.

England manager Gareth Southgate revealed straight after the draw was made that he would be burning the midnight oil watching video footage of the Central Americans to try and familiarise himself with what they have to offer.

“Sadly, yes, that is the sort of thing I do in the evening,” said Southgate.
“Everyone knows we will be favourites to win this match and we have to live with that.”

This will all depend on how England have fared in their opening contest against Tunisia and if Southgate still has a full squad available, or whether his selection has been compromised by injuries or, dare we say it, suspensions.

At the last two of his three tournaments in charge of England, Roy Hodgson named the same starting XI for both of the first two group games and previously, at Euro 2012, made only one change for the second match.

Panama have some vastly experienced international players with goalkeeper Jaime Penedo and strikers Blas Perez and Luis Tejada all having well over 100 caps. But most of their squad operate at a club level way below their England counterparts, although defenders Fidel Escobar and Michael Murillo are with New York Red Bulls in MLS along with Anibal Godoy of San Jose Earthquakes.

England vs Panama odds

  1/4 England (Ladbrokes)
19/4 Draw (BetVictor)
14/1 Panama (Ladbrokes)

It is difficult to know just what to expect from this match before we have seen how Panama fare against Belgium in their opening game because they have never previously qualified for a World Cup finals.

But the Central Americans are just outside the top 50 in the FIFA World Rankings, putting them at a similar level to the likes of Nigeria who are much better fancied to make an impact in Russia and therefore it may be wise not to underestimate them.

However, it would still be a surprise if England slipped up and a 3-1 correct score appeals at odds of 13/1 with BetVictor as this is expected to be a more open game than the Tunisia one, while England to win and over 2.5 goals in the match at Evens with Ladbrokes could provide some consolation if we hit the crossbar with the bigger-priced wager.
