Denmark v Republic of Ireland World Cup qualifying play-off predictions, betting tips and match preview here. With a place at next summer's finals in Russia up for grabs we're anticipating a tight game in the first leg of this play-off clash.

  • Denmark are unbeaten in their last ten matches in all competitions
  • Ireland have lost just one of their last six matches away from home
  • The Green Army haven't lost to Rode-Hvide since 1985

Denmark v Ireland betting preview

Denmark recovered well after a slow start in their qualifying campaign for next summer's World Cup. After missing out on the extended European Championships last year, a slow start to the current campaign saw Rode-Hvide struggle to a hard-fought win over Armenia before tasting defeat against Poland and Montenegro in their opening three matches of the campaign and after that they were always playing catch-up against the Eagles who went on to top the group.

However in the seven remaining matches, Age Hareide's men managed to put in some much improved performances and remained unbeaten, with a 4-0 hammering of Poland on home turf and a hard-fought away win over their main rivals for the play-off spot Montenegro being particularly important. With the home advantage, Hareide will understand the importance of taking the lead into the second leg in Dublin by winning this game at odds of 3/4 with Paddy Power.

The Republic of Ireland have faced a very tough time in qualifying but have battled hard in a rollercoaster campaign to earn the second place in what was a very tight group. With the quality that they possess, Austria were expected to top the group, but instead Serbia produced the finest form to lose just one of their 10 games and top the group whilst Wales and the Republic of Ireland battled it out for the second spot and the play-off position.

Martin O'Neill's men were held to frustrating draws by the likes of Austria and Georgia, but they too lost just one of their qualifying games and on the final day of qualifying they made the relatively short trip to Wales and produced a huge performance to win 1-0 thanks to a James McClean strike to leapfrog the Dragons into the play-off spot. Having done enough to remain in with a chance of qualification, can they produce another away win now at odds of 19/4 with Unibet.

With so much at stake in this tie, we're anticipating a nervy affair with few chances at either end. Both sides have been stronger defensively than they have going forward throughout the qualifying campaign. Denmark have conceded just three goals in their last six qualifying matches, whilst Ireland have been even better at the back, keeping clean sheets in five of their last nine games. With two strong defences on show, under 2.5 goals at 4/7 with Ladbrokes looks good to us.

With the home advantage and for our money slightly stronger squad on paper, we can see the hosts grinding out a narrow but vital victory in this game. The Irish backline will try to keep things tight and ensure they have something to take back to Dublin for the second leg, but with the likes of Kasper Dolberg and Christian Eriksen likely to play some part, Denmark should fashion themselves a narrow 1-0 victory which we're backing at 9/2 with William Hill.

Recommended bets:
Under 2.5 goals @ 4/7 with Ladbrokes
Denmark to win 1-0 @ 9/2 with William Hill
