Croatia vs Greece predictions for their World Cup play-off first leg in Zagreb on Thursday. These teams are seeking an advantage ahead of Sunday’s return match. Read on for our free predictions and betting tips.

Greece know all about causing upsets in international football and could offer some value to deny Croatia a place at the 2018 World Cup.

There has been no bigger shock at a major international tournament than when Greece triumphed at Euro 2004, while at the last World Cup they came through a play-off against Romania and then turned over the Ivory Coast in their final group match in Brazil to unexpectedly reach the knockout stage when all had looked lost.

So the Greeks tend to thrive as underdogs and that is definitely the case here, because Croatia are the hot favourites to secure a place in Russia after being pipped to top spot in their group by Iceland.

A 1-1 draw at home to Finland on the penultimate match-day proved very costly for Croatia, who immediately sacked coach Ante Cacic and although his replacement Zlatko Dalic won 2-0 away to the Ukraine in his first match in charge, he remains only an interim successor.

The future of Dalic, who has named Ivica Olic as his assistant, will inevitably be determined by this tie, but the 51-year-old is very inexperienced at this level having spent much of his career coaching clubs in the Middle East.

He is without key midfielders Milan Badelj and Mateo Kovacic, but nevertheless that area of the pitch is where Croatia are particularly strong with Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic and Ivan Perisic.

In terms of the big picture, Greece will need to stay in the tie when they visit Zagreb but if they give themselves a chance, they can easily be fancied to complete the job back at the home of Olympiakos which is a very difficult place for any opposition to visit, as Barcelona found in the Champions League last week.

Michael Skibbe led his side to a draw away to Belgium earlier this year despite them being reduced to nine men and the Greeks look a sporting wager to add another upset to their collection across the two legs as a whole.

Croatia vs Greece stats

  • These countries have met six times previously, all since 1996, with Greece winning twice and Croatia once with three draws
  • All three of those draws occurred when Croatia were at home and by different scorelines (0-0, 1-1 and 2-2)
  • Croatia are unbeaten at home since October 2013 (lost 2-1 to Belgium)
