Brazil vs Chile betting tips

Chile’s prospects of qualifying for the World Cup look decidedly shaky and we think they will be left hanging on the results of other matches with a closing defeat in Brazil.

Despite sitting third in the CONMEBOL table with four automatic places in Russia and a play-off spot available, Chile, winners of the last two Copa America competitions, could yet find themselves ending up seventh as the worst-case scenario.

Brazil are the only South American nation to be absolutely certain of contesting next summer’s tournament, although Uruguay do look pretty secure with a home match against Bolivia to come.

Then two of the next five, who are separated by only two points, will miss out and one more goes into a play-off against New Zealand.

Chile, of course, can take care of their own destiny by winning at Allianz Parque, but they have never triumphed away to Brazil and nor have the home side ever lost a World Cup qualifier in their own country.

Motivation could, however, be a big factor. Since qualifying for the World Cup in March, Brazil have been held by Colombia and Bolivia and you have to wonder just how ‘on it’ they will be this time, bearing in mind Chile’s result will affect Argentina’s chances of making it to Russia.

In addition, coach Tite has lost defenders Thiago Silva, Filipe Luis and Marcelo to injuries, so Alexis Sanchez and co will fancy their chances of scoring goals, although key Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal is suspended.

But only Uruguay have taken points off Brazil at home during this campaign and Tite’s men really do look a surprisingly backable price to continue their home dominance against La Roja, who will need to hope at least two of Colombia, Peru, Argentina and Paraguay fail to win if they suffer a Sao Paulo defeat.

Brazil vs Chile stats

  • These countries have met 71 times previously, Brazil winning 50 and Chile eight with 13 draws
  • Brazil have never lost at home to Chile
  • Chile’s victory in the reverse fixture of this qualifying campaign was their first against Brazil in the last 15 attempts
