Belgium v Cyprus betting preview

Belgium's so-called 'Golden Generation' were disappointed with their performance at last year's European Championships as they were dumped out of the competition in the Quarter Finals by relative minnows Wales, having promised so much in qualifying. With such a talented squad, Roberto Martinez is looking for a better performance at next summer's World Cup in his first international tournament as a manager.

Qualification for Russia 2018 has been a breeze for the Spaniard and his side as they've dropped just two points from a possible 27 so far, drawing at home to Greece but winning their other eight matches with a degree of ease. Despite some key players including Manchester United duo Marouane Fellaini and Romelu Lukaku being set to miss out here, they should take the win at odds of 1/10 with William Hill.

Cyprus are one of a handful of smaller European nations that are showing real signs of improvement in recent years. Perhaps the increased likelihood of qualification for a major tournament serves as motivation after the expansion of the European Championships and for a side so often finishing bottom if their qualifying groups, to pick up 10 points from the tough fixtures they've faced is something of an achievement.

Two of their wins in the group did come over the minnows of Gibraltar but they also picked up an impressive home win over Bosnia-Herzegovina and they could even finish in fourth place rather than second bottom should they pick up the three points in this game. It has to be said that a victory for Ran Ben Shimon's men would be considered a major shock however, hence odds as long as 50/1 with BetVictor.

Although Cyprus have become more difficult to break down in recent games, this match represents the biggest challenge they've faced in quite some time and many of the Belgium players will be out to impress here knowing that their chances could be limited if they're to break into the starting eleven ahead of next summer's tournament. We're backing a Belgium side packed with serious quality to breeze to a comfortable win with a three goal handicap at 21/10 with Paddy Power.

With 10 goals, Lukaku has been the main man in attack for Belgium in this qualifying period but as he misses out through injury, Napoli's Dries Mertens looks to fill the void. The 30 year old has scored nine times in 11 outings for the Serie A side in all competitions so far this term and he'll be looking to add to his 13 goal international tally by scoring at any time in this game at 3/4 with Ladbrokes.

Recommended bets:
Belgium to win with a three goal handicap @ 21/10 with Paddy Power
Dries Mertens to score at any time @ 3/4 with Ladbrokes
