Wigan have been more productive on the road this season, but at home to Sunderland at the weekend they can pick up a much needed three points.

Roberto Martinez’s men showed a lot of spirit to win 1-0 at Bournemouth during the week and boosted by some new signings, they can perhaps eye a positive run over the next few matches.
Following the visit of Sunderland on Saturday, the Latics take on Stoke City and Southampton, so this is a crucial couple of weeks for them. As we have discovered over recent years, they tend to perform at their best with the pressure on too.
Wigan are the 23/20 (Blue Square
) favourites for success on Sunday, but their home form has been very poor of late. They have lost three of their last four without conceding a goal, while it is only two victories at the DW Stadium all season.
In fairness to Wigan though, the last three home defeats have been against Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United. It has been a tough few weeks for them on home soil and against Sunderland – who sit six points above them at the moment – they will hope to have a successful afternoon.
As mentioned, they have been boosted by a new signing or two, freshening up a squad for a very important few weeks. Roger Espinoza and Angelo Henriquez both played their part in the win at Bournemouth and they are available at 10/1 and 15/8 (Bet365
) to score at anytime.
As for Sunderland, they will need to lift themselves after the home defeat to Bolton in the FA Cup during the week. Losing to the Championship side was unexpected and frustrating for everything involved.
However, they can now concentrate purely on their league form and it seems fair to say the FA Cup defeat will be forgotten if they pick up a valuable three points at Wigan on Saturday. They are 12/5 (Ladbrokes
) to do just that while the draw is available at 23/10.
Martin O’Neill’s men are very hit and miss on the road though. They have two away wins in the Premier League this season, although these have both come in the last five games. So they are improving.
However, in a closely fought contest at Wigan on Saturday, Sunderland could have one of their more disappointing away days.
They have only won once at the DW Stadium in the Premier League and just as it looks like Sunderland are pulling away from the bottom three and Wigan are struggling, this result will put a spanner in the works.
