Wigan came within seconds of winning the original match in this tie and are fancied to complete the job back on home soil against a team from two divisions above them.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe nearly paid the price for making several changes to his line-up as his side were desperately close to an FA Cup exit at the opening hurdle, trailing 2-0 at half time to a Will Grigg tap-in and an Emerson Hyndman own goal.

But in fairness to the Cherries, they were the better team on the day and their performance deserved a replay which they secured through Lys Mousset’s first goal for the club and a Steve Cook equaliser two minutes into stoppage time.

Thus the Premier League club will have to make the journey north to again face the team that went into the weekend top of the League One table, and it is certainly possible that the rivalry could be renewed again next season in the Championship if Bournemouth do not improve their form during the second half of the campaign.

Very much in the dogfight at the bottom end of the top-flight table, staying up is of paramount importance to Bournemouth and you get the impression that Howe would readily sacrifice the chance of progressing in the FA Cup if it helped the prospects of avoiding relegation.

In contrast, this is more of a free hit for Wigan because they were at home to Peterborough on Saturday (result not known at the time of writing) and they knew the clubs in second and third positions were playing each other, so victory over Posh would do their promotion hopes a power of good with at least one of their rivals certain to lose ground.

This could come down to who wants it more rather than sheer talent winning through and the Latics may feel they are ‘owed’ a victory having had it snatched away from them so agonisingly on the south coast.

Wigan Athletic vs Bournemouth stats

  • Bournemouth have never beaten Wigan in a cup match in five attempts, four of them in the FA Cup

  • Bournemouth have won only once in their last 12 visits to Wigan
