Shrewsbury Town were the better team in the original match of this tie and will hope to show that their best chance of progressing has not already passed them by.

The League One promotion-chasers hosted a West Ham team that had played two matches in the previous five days and whose manager David Moyes was struggling to name a side due to a lengthy injury list.

Moyes did field a line-up that had plenty of experience, but he filled the bench with kids and it was clearly a fixture West Ham were simply not up for because their players were wasting time at every opportunity, clearly desperate to merely get through the 90 minutes unscathed and unbeaten.

They achieved that, but not without a few scares with a low winter sun doing its best to blind the players and goalkeeper Joe Hart, playing against his first and hometown club, had to borrow a cap from a supporter in order to shield his eyes.

The surprise package of the third tier this term, Shrewsbury have an excellent defensive record but their goals supply has dried up of late and last Wednesday’s Checkatrade Trophy tie against Blackpool, which they won on penalties, was their third 0-0 draw in five games.

Since then, they have visited Blackburn in the league (result not known at the time of writing) which was a huge fixture in the chase for an automatic promotion spot with the Shrews going into that game five points clear of Rovers in second place.

Our sole bet on the first game was landed as we more than doubled our money on a clean sheet being kept, and we will use those winnings to go with the same wager again which has proved highly profitable in Shrewsbury matches from mid-October onwards.

West Ham United vs Shrewsbury Town stats

  • This is only the sixth ever meeting between these two clubs, who previously met in what is now the Championship in 1979-80 and 1980-81 before West Ham were promoted
  • Both clubs have two wins each over the other, one at home and one away, with the only draw being the match that set up this replay
  • Going into Saturday’s match away to Blackburn, Shrewsbury had kept six clean sheets in their previous seven games
