West Brom could not have started the season in better style and are fancied to make it four league and cup wins out of four by beating their manager Tony Pulis’ former club Stoke City.

If any of us had been asked to name three clubs that would open their Premier League campaigns with two consecutive wins to nil, it is highly doubtful that West Brom and Huddersfield would have been near the top of the list.

But along with Manchester United, that is exactly what has happened and it merely serves to confirm that the Baggies are a team to side with in the first half of the campaign when they are striving to reach that important 40-point mark as quickly as possible.

Pulis continues to do an excellent job in keeping the Albion among the 10 best football teams in England and has seen goals from Ahmed Hegazy and Hal Robson-Kanu earn victories over Bournemouth and Burnley respectively.

Then, given the shortage of numbers in his squad, Pulis had to again field many of the same players in the Carabao Cup at Accrington on Tuesday, a tie they won 3-1 and which enabled Robson-Kanu to serve his suspension having been sent off 12 minutes after scoring his winner at Burnley.

It has also been a good week for Stoke, who turned over Arsenal at home with a goal from new signing Jese, while they also put four goals without reply past Rochdale in the Carabao Cup.

The result against Arsenal in particular must have pleased Potters manager Mark Hughes no end because his side have been slow starters in the last few years before picking up in the autumn, and this earlier-than-usual victory will raise expectations that a better campaign is on the cards.

However, Pulis has a particularly good record when facing clubs he used to manage and his solid defence can resist everything Stoke throw at them in order to keep the winning run going.
