Only one point separated these clubs in last season’s final Premier League table and it’s West Brom whom we are backing to get off to the better start in 2017-18.

The Baggies occupied eighth position for much of last term, being in no-man’s-land with a wide points gap on either side of them until suffering another of their late-season slumps and eventually being overtaken by Southampton and Bournemouth.

With history having repeated itself like that, the time to side with the Albion is definitely in the earlier part of the campaign when they are more formidable because they appear to ‘knock off’ when there is no longer any threat of them being caught up in a relegation battle.

Tony Pulis’ side certainly hit the ground running last season, winning 1-0 away to the manager’s former club Crystal Palace on the opening weekend whereas Bournemouth have lost at home when kicking off their two previous Premier League campaigns.

Admittedly West Brom finished last of four in the Barclays Asia Trophy in Hong Kong as they stepped up their preparations for the new campaign, but at least their summer signing Jay Rodriguez has already been among the goals in the warm-up games as he tries to properly resurrect his career following a serious knee injury.

Bournemouth made three early new signings in Asmir Begovic, Nathan Ake and Jermain Defoe, whose arrivals were probably on the cards some time previously, and manager Eddie Howe must be pleased with the way his club have kept their squad together after such a strong finish to last season when they took 11 points from the last 15 available.

But on recent evidence, the Cherries need a competitive match or two to reach their stride and so with home advantage it’s West Brom who will carry our money to bag an early three points.
