Watford vs Liverpool predictions for their Premier League match at Vicarage Road on Saturday August 12. This is match No 2 of 380 in the Premier League’s 2017-18 season. Read on for our free predictions and betting tips.

Watford have a strong recent record on the opening weekend of a season but it is expected to be dented when they host Champions League hopefuls Liverpool.

Marco Silva is the manager charged with making it 12 campaigns in a row when Watford have collected at least a point from their first league match, the Portuguese coach sitting in the Vicarage Road dugout having been appointed as successor to Walter Mazzarri.

The bar has been set high for Silva, with both Mazzarri and his predecessor Quique Sanchez Flores sacked despite keeping the Hornets in the top flight whereas the new Watford boss suffered relegation after taking over at Hull City in January.

Yet Silva cannot be given too much of the blame for that, especially as Hull appeared to improve considerably after his arrival, and his record with his previous clubs Estoril, Sporting Lisbon and Olympiakos was impressive.

He now has a squad that has been boosted this summer by the permanent signings of Alaves right-back Kiko Femenia and midfield trio Tom Cleverley, Nathaniel Chalobah and Will Hughes, who give the club’s homegrown contingent a welcome boost.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have the distraction of their Champions League play-off first leg against Hoffenheim just a few days after this game, but at least the Saturday lunchtime kick-off gives manager Jurgen Klopp a bit longer to prepare for the trip to his native Germany.

At the time of writing, Klopp had signed Mohamed Salah, Dominic Solanke and Andy Robertson to bolster his squad, but there looked sure to be considerably more transfer activity at Anfield before the end of August with Philippe Coutinho the subject of big interest from Barcelona.

Winners of the Barclays Premier League Asia Trophy in Hong Kong, where Salah showed he could prove a shrewd acquisition after his £37million move from Roma, Liverpool should be too good for Watford and are expected to open up their season by winning with something to spare.
