League positions suggest there is little to choose between these teams, despite them being in different divisions, and Wolves look worth backing to prevail at the second time of asking.

At present, it looks highly likely that the only way these clubs will meet again next season is in a cup competition because they may well be swapping divisions, Wolves heading up to the Premier League while Swansea drop to the Championship.

Momentum is clearly with the Midlands club, who went into last weekend 12 points clear at the top of the second tier whereas Swansea were four points from safety in the division above.

They could not be separated in the original match of this tie at Molineux which was notable only for a red card on either side, Ruben Vinagre being sent off in the first half for a dreadful challenge on Nathan Dyer while Leroy Fer followed midway through the second period.

However, Fer will be free to play in this game because Swansea lodged a successful appeal against his punishment as the offence was deemed not to constitute violent conduct after all.

But even with the Dutch midfielder available, Carlos Carvalhal’s side look up against it here because Wolves are carrying all before them having compiled a 13-match unbeaten run, containing 10 wins, before Saturday’s trip to Barnsley (result not known at the time of writing).

In contrast, Swansea had won only twice in 16 before going to Newcastle and it’s clear that the disparity in league status between the duo presents a false picture because it is obvious that Wolves are the more effective team, regardless of what happened in the first meeting.

We are unconcerned that the Welsh club have home advantage this time because they have won only twice at the Liberty Stadium this term and it’s Nuno Espirito Santo who is expected to come out on top in this clash of Portuguese managers.
