Southampton vs Swansea City predictions for their opening Premier League match at St Mary’s Stadium. Saints play their first competitive match under manager Mauricio Pellegrino. Read on for our free predictions and betting tips.

Mauricio Pellegrino can make a winning start as Southampton manager against a Swansea side who may again find themselves fighting a relegation battle in the 2017-18 campaign.

Former Valencia and Liverpool defender Pellegrino was appointed by Saints this summer after they sacked Claude Puel following an underwhelming solitary campaign in charge, save for leading them to the EFL Cup Final.

Puel had two difficult acts to follow in Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman, who arguably overachieved, and Pellegrino will be aware he needs to turn Southampton back into challengers for European football in the top eight of the Premier League table – or, at the very least, get the fans firmly behind him with some exciting football.

Despite having had a fine solitary season in charge of Alaves last term, in which he took them into the top half of La Liga table and to the Copa del Rey final, Pellegrino was still a slightly surprising choice by Southampton despite also being strongly linked with Crystal Palace.

Perhaps, after their positive experience with Pochettino, the club are pre-disposed towards Argentines called Mauricio P!

We have doubts about just how effective Pellegrino will be on the whole, but do expect his honeymoon period to continue with victory over Swansea.

This looked like being a big summer transfer window for the Swans, particularly the latter part of it because they looked certain to part with their talisman Gylfi Sigurdsson after omitting him from their tour of the United States due to interest from Everton and Leicester City.

A fee of £40million-plus would enable Paul Clement to strengthen his squad in more than one area but whether anyone, whether individually or collectively, can replicate what Sigurdsson gave to Swansea in terms of goals and assists is doubtful.

Clement did well to keep Swansea up after his appointment in January, but things will be no less tough this time around and they are fancied to draw a blank on their trip to England’s south coast.
