Southampton vs Newcastle United predictions for their Premier League match at St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday. Saints are aiming to reverse their poor goalscoring form. Read on for our free predictions and betting tips.

Southampton are on a desperately poor run of goalscoring form at home, but their head-to-head record against Newcastle is strong and they may be able to eke out a narrow win this weekend.

Saints are not the only Premier League team struggling to find the back of the net, but their shocking sequence of results on their own pitch dates back to April and they really need to start reversing the depressing trend or they will soon find themselves heading for the danger zone.

We have said it before and it bears repeating…Southampton appear to have lost their way a bit since Ronald Koeman’s departure and their subsequent managerial appointments, Claude Puel and Mauricio Pellegrino, have proved to be underwhelming.

Pellegrino, a former defender, appears good at setting up a solid team but his current side are producing little in the way of goal threat having drawn a blank five times out of eight this season.

Now the Argentine pits his wits against his former mentor Rafael Benitez, the pair having been master and apprentice with Liverpool, whom Pellegrino joined as a player halfway through the 2004-05 Champions League-winning campaign – although he was cup-tied – and Inter Milan.

Benitez will be the happier with the start his club have made to the campaign and Newcastle held Liverpool last time out, but apart from a 1-0 win at Swansea where they rode their luck they have made no impact away from home, losing their other two matches to a solitary goal.

Given the respective home and away records on show here, this looks unlikely to be a high-scoring encounter unless Southampton can grab an early goal and it brings the confidence flooding back.

If either team was to snatch it we would have to side with the Saints, but they are invariably too short in the match result odds and instead the peripheral markets offer much better value for what is likely to be a tight affair.
