Sheffield Wednesday vs Swansea City predictions for Saturday’s FA Cup fifth-round tie at Hillsborough. Carlos Carvalhal returns to the club he left just before Christmas. Read on for our free predictions and betting tips.

Carlos Carvalhal is back at Hillsborough on Saturday faster than he probably expected with his career having taken a remarkable upturn since he and Sheffield Wednesday parted company.

The Portuguese manager left the Owls by mutual consent on Christmas Eve with the club struggling to get anywhere near to challenging for the Championship play-offs which they had contested under Carvalhal in both of the previous two seasons.

Within a few days, Carvalhal had been appointed as the surprising successor to Paul Clement at Swansea City – and what an inspired decision by their board it has proven to be, with the Welsh club having won six, drawn four and lost only one of their 11 matches under the 52-year-old.

Before their midweek home match against Derby, Wednesday had also played 11 games since Carvalhal’s departure and their record is much less impressive – three wins, five draws and three defeats, although only one of the losses had occurred since Jos Luhukay was installed as boss.

Low-scoring draws have been the theme of the Dutchman’s reign so far, with Luhukay at least making Wednesday more difficult to beat, and such an outcome looks highly feasible again this weekend as his team take on Carvalhal’s new charges for a place in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

This is the third consecutive round in which the Swans have been drawn away to lower-division opposition in the original match and they have needed a replay back at the Liberty Stadium to progress both times, more recently dishing out an 8-1 drubbing to Notts County.

Even though some Wednesday fans were glad to see the back of Carvalhal, many will applaud him on his return due to those two play-off appearances and we think the connection between club and former manager will not end here, with another replay for Swansea appealing as the best bet.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Swansea City stats

  • This is only the second FA Cup tie between these clubs, Sheffield Wednesday having won the first 1-0 in the 1961-62 third round
  • There have been four league meetings since 1984, all in the Championship between 2008 and 2010, and under 2.5 goals were scored each time
  • Three of those four matches ended as draws and the other, at Hillsborough, in a Swansea victory
