Sheffield Wednesday v Derby match preview

Sheffield Wednesday did little to help their cause to push up the table on Saturday, after being held to a 1-1 draw away to Yorkshire rivals Barnsley at Oakwell. The points leaves the Owls only six clear of the relegation zone and still well short of their pre-season ambitions, where they would've hoped to have been in the promotion conversation. Now 18 points adrift of the playoffs, serious changes are anticipated at Hillsborough in the summer - though they must first initially concentrate on retaining their Championship status.

Defeat for Wednesday in midweek would really crank up the pressure on the team and they are arguably facing the toughest matchup they could in the Championship at this moment. Wednesday’s problems have primarily come in front of goal, scoring just 32 goals in 31 league games to date, while Derby are a side who generally don’t tend to concede many away from home.

The Rams weren’t quite at their best on Saturday and fell out of the automatic promotion places as a result, after battling back from behind to draw 1-1 with Norwich City. The in-form Canaries looked to be stern opposition and proved to be so, halting the excellent form of Derby in taking a point away from Pride Park. Throughout Gary Rowett’s squad is a wealth of experience and knowhow at this level, with such wisdom likely to serve them well in the closing stages of the season.

Derby’s away form is a significant factor in their current position in the Championship table, currently finding themselves on an incredible run of 11 games unbeaten away from Pride Park. Rowett is known for his ability to organise a team, a skill highlighted by the fact they have kept five clean sheets in their last six away, conceding more than once just twice thus far in the campaign. It seems their priority is to not lose when playing away, particularly in midweek games, drawing three of their four midweek games on the road.

Wednesday’s supporters have begun to grow restless with this under performing team, leaving pressure on the home team to take the game to Derby - a tactic which may well play into their hands. That said, expect the Rams to keep the game tight, with goals for home teams coming at a premium when they come to town.
