As they did 48 hours earlier when they took on Los Angeles Galaxy, the Red Devils meet an MLS side before starting their commitments in the International Champions Cup which they won just after Louis van Gaal had been appointed as their manager in 2014.

Now, of course, Jose Mourinho is in charge and hoping to challenge for the more prestigious trophies than the three he collected during his opening campaign at the helm – the FA Community Shield, the League Cup and the Europa League, the latter guaranteeing a Champions League group-stage berth.

Before United kick off their Premier League assault at home to West Ham United, Mourinho will want to have added a fourth piece of silverware in the shape of the UEFA Super Cup at the expense of his former club, Champions League winners Real Madrid, in Skopje, Macedonia.

That match culminates a pre-season of high-profile friendly matches for United which also include clashes in the United States with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester City, plus trips to Oslo and Dublin to play Valerenga and Sampdoria respectively.

By which point United will have signed all the players they want to bring in this summer remains to be seen, but their first week of training in California did have two new additions in defender Victor Lindelof and striker Romelu Lukaku, signed for combined transfer fees of around £110million.

At this early stage of pre-season, it is expected most players in the squad will get minutes on the pitch during each game and whether it is against LA Galaxy or Real Salt Lake, it will be interesting to see how much action there is for the likes of youngsters Andreas Pereira, Demetri Mitchell and Scott McTominay to gauge how likely they are to remain in the first-team squad.

Real Salt Lake, meanwhile, were the 2009 MLS Cup winners and 2013 runners-up and are currently struggling to reach the current season’s play-offs from the Western Conference, with a last-place finishing spot in that section looking a distinct possibility for them.

Their best-known players in Europe are former Manchester City trainee and Slovakia international midfielder Albert Rusnak, Armenian striker Yura Movsisyan and their captain, United States international defender Kyle Beckerman.
