Usually in this biennial tournament, three Premier League clubs are joined by a local team but on this occasion all four contenders have made the long journey from England to Hong Kong.

First held in 2003, the Premier League Asia Trophy is being staged for the fourth time in Hong Kong with the other previous venues having been Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Beijing and Singapore.

Of this year’s participants only Liverpool have prior experience of the competition, finishing as runners-up to Portsmouth in 2007. The other previous winners are Chelsea (twice), Bolton Wanderers, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Arsenal.

The Premier League Asia Trophy takes the format of semi-finals, final and a third-place play-off, with a three-day gap between the first and second matches each team will play.

The first match was between two Midlands clubs, Leicester City and West Bromwich Albion, and at the end of 90 minutes it was all-square at 1-1 as Riyad Mahrez netted an equaliser after the Baggies’ new striker signing, Jay Rodriguez, had opened the scoring.

That meant a penalty shootout and all of the first 12 spot-kicks were scored before Sam Field missed for West Brom, allowing Marc Albrighton to win it for Leicester by converting his attempt.

Straight afterwards, Liverpool improved their inauspicious recent record against Crystal Palace, who have won on their last three visits to Anfield, by prevailing 2-0.

Young striker Dominic Solanke, signed from Chelsea this summer, gave the Reds the lead after a goalless first half and Divock Origi wrapped it up with a straightforward finish from close range.

This is a second long-haul trip for Liverpool since the end of last season as they also went to Australia at the end of May for a friendly match against Sydney FC which they won 3-0.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are also due to take part in the Audi Cup at the Allianz Arena on August 1-2 in which the other teams involved are hosts Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and Napoli.
