Tottenham Hotspur appear to be a little way behind their main rivals in terms of preparations for the 2017-18 season and could be worth opposing when they visit Tyneside.

Mauricio Pochettino seems to favour a softly-softly approach in the build-up to a campaign for it was a similar story last year, and perhaps he thinks it reduces the chances of his players burning out when it gets to the critical stage of the campaign.

Certainly Spurs have held their form very well throughout the last two seasons, being the only team to make a fight of it in the title race with Leicester and Chelsea respectively, so perhaps there is plenty of basis in such a theory.

Whereas other managers have been dashing around trying to sign new players as well as train the ones they have, ‘Poch’ had not dipped into the transfer market before the start of August to even spend any of the £50million received for Kyle Walker on a replacement right-back.

That probably will happen at some point this month, but clearly the Argentine is happy with a squad and especially a first XI that was in terrific form in the last few months of 2016-17.

But they may have been a touch undercooked when drawing 1-1 at Everton on the opening day of last term and face no easy task visiting a Newcastle side who have a good recent record against Tottenham.

The Magpies have not done anything spectacular in the transfer market themselves this summer, possibly to the chagrin of manager Rafael Benitez, but the Spaniard showed in the Championship last season that he remains very capable of getting the best out of the resources at his disposal.

This is probably the best time to play Spurs, who also have to get used to staging home matches at Wembley until White Hart Lane is rebuilt, and the Geordies are fancied to claim a point at least.
