Newcastle United vs Stoke City predictions for their Premier League match at St James’ Park on Saturday. The Magpies are seeking a third win in a row. Read on for our free predictions and betting tips.

Stoke City have made their best start to a season for four years and are fancied to continue that promise by maintaining their strong recent head-to-head record against Newcastle.

The Potters had become synonymous with being slowly into stride, having to wait until late September or even October for their first Premier League win in the previous two campaigns, but that has not been the case this time.

Mark Hughes’ side got the monkey off their back nice and early when beating Arsenal at the bet365 Stadium and have since remained unbeaten, drawing at West Brom and then 2-2 at home to Manchester United last Saturday thanks to a Maxim Choupo-Moting double.

Next up for Stoke is a trip to Tyneside and as the stats below outline, they have had much the better of things when playing Newcastle from 2014 onwards.

Although Magpies manager Rafael Benitez was unwell last weekend and had to stay at home, he will have felt better after his side won 1-0 at Swansea to follow up their previous 3-0 success against West Ham.

It has not been the easiest summer for Benitez with some disappointments in the transfer market and although Newcastle rode their luck in south Wales, the Spaniard will be pleased that his defence has recorded back-to-back clean sheets and they have something to build on.

But what encourages us about Stoke for this game is just how competitive they have been against top opposition, for they were full value for the four points they collected against Arsenal and Manchester United with their new attackers Jese and Choupo-Moting having settled in well.

It’s a slight concern as to whether they will be quite as effective away from home, but Hughes perhaps has higher-quality options at his disposal than Benitez when a goal is needed and the visitors look good value to pull off a victory in the North East.

Newcastle United vs Stoke City stats

  • The last five matches between these clubs have contained a total of only five goals
  • Stoke are unbeaten in those five games with three 1-0 wins and two draws
  • A clean sheet has been kept in eight of Stoke’s last 10 away matches
