Newcastle United vs Southampton betting tips

Southampton have a strong recent head-to-head record against Newcastle and are fancied to leave the North East undefeated again on Saturday.

It’s the second meeting this season of the master and his former apprentice because Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez used to have Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino as a coach and assistant at Liverpool and Inter Milan.

Their first meeting in opposing dugouts was at St Mary’s Stadium in October when it finished 2-2, Pellegrino probably ending up the happier of the duo on the day as his side had to twice equalise through Manolo Gabbiadini’s double.

With West Brom looking increasingly likely to fill one of the bottom three places in the Premier League at the end of the season, it is very unlikely both Benitez and Pellegrino will be relegated. But one of them certainly could be, as their clubs are within easy reach of those in the drop zone.

In terms of current form, Southampton have lost only one of their last 10 matches and are through to an FA Cup quarter-final away to League One club Wigan Athletic, while the first of the stats above highlights their encouraging results when facing Newcastle in the last few years.

The Magpies have been experiencing a more difficult time of it than their visitors lately, but what must not be overlooked is that their last home game ended in a 1-0 success against Manchester United which showed what can be achieved when they put their mind to it.

Benitez’s side are actually unbeaten on Tyneside since they were edged out narrowly by Manchester City on December 27 and that may well remain the case after this game.

However, Southampton are showing enough to suggest they can also get a result and the head-to-head record is a further indication that Pellegrino and Benitez may again have to share the spoils, as they did on the south coast back in the autumn.
