Newcastle United vs Manchester United betting tips

These clubs have put plenty of goals past each other down the years, but this has the look of a tight contest in which defences are expected to hold sway.

It tends to be all or nothing when Newcastle face Manchester United, a goalfest or a close encounter settled by one goal if not a bore draw.

In seven of the last 13 meetings, one team or even both has scored three or more goals, but four of the other clashes ended 0-0 or 1-0. We fancy it to be the latter scenario again this weekend.

That is essentially down to the two sides’ defensive records. Manchester United have kept seven clean sheets in their last eight games, the exception being when they barely turned up away to Tottenham and lost 2-0.

Goalkeeper David De Gea and his back four need not be too worried about facing Newcastle, who have scored more than a solitary goal in only one of their last nine matches and that was against League Two club Luton Town in the FA Cup.

But similar to their visitors, the Magpies do not concede too many on their own pitch, as the stats below outline. All of Newcastle’s last five home Premier League games have contained under 2.5 goals – and they have won none of them, drawing three and losing 1-0 to Manchester City and Everton.

They did not taste victory in either of the two before that also, and you have to go back to October 21 against a then-struggling Crystal Palace side to find the last time Rafael Benitez’s men claimed three points on Tyneside – and that was by a 1-0 scoreline as well.

We do not think they will win here either but rather than backing the Red Devils at a short price, the goals markets look to offer the best value - and it would not be the biggest surprise if Newcastle managed to hold Jose Mourinho’s team to a low-scoring draw.
