Middlesbrough vs Sheffield United betting tips

Middlesbrough did not make the start to the Championship season they were hoping for when they lost at Wolves last weekend and further problems could be in store against Sheffield United.

Boro have been the subject of strong support in recent weeks to bounce straight back up to the Premier League, not only to be promoted but also to finish top of the table after manager Garry Monk made three notable striker signings in Britt Assombalonga, Ashley Fletcher and Martin Braithwaite.

All of the trio started the match at Molineux last Saturday but they drew a blank as the Teessiders were beaten by the ambitious, big-spending Midlanders whose own new striker signing, Leo Bonatini, notched the only goal.

Even Monk’s back-up forwards, Patrick Bamford and Rudy Gestede, who both know all about scoring goals in the Championship and were with Middlesbrough in the top flight last term, could not make a significant impression after entering the fray from the substitutes’ bench.

Eventually, Boro should be fine. They certainly have the firepower to launch a promotion challenge, but it’s a long season and nothing is decided in August.

However, they may be worth opposing at present, especially against a Sheffield United side who romped to the League One title after suffering only two defeats since November and started their second-tier campaign with a 1-0 home success against Brentford thanks to a goal from Billy Sharp – his 52nd for the Blades in only 91 league appearances since returning from Leeds United.

Chris Wilder’s men are bound to be full of confidence and this looks to be a good time for them to visit Middlesbrough and leave with a point at least before the home team’s new strikers properly find their feet.
