Manchester United vs West Ham United predictions for their Premier League match at Old Trafford on Sunday August 13. The Red Devils are aiming to launch a title challenge this season. Read on for our free predictions and betting tips.

Manchester United will be desperate to contend for the Premier League crown this term but do not face an easy start against a West Ham side bolstered by some shrewd-looking summer signings.

They say Jose Mourinho’s second season with a club is generally his best, having had 12 months to bed in and get to know his players, and so there may never be a better time for him to get United challenging at the top end of the table again before his ‘third year syndrome’ kicks in.

Of course, the latter notion is purely theoretical but it does have some basis in fact with his previous clubs, although the ‘Special One’ is talking long-term about his Old Trafford future.

Nevertheless, having finished sixth in 2016-17 despite collecting a couple of trophies, being in the running for a 21st English championship is the least United will expect this time around for they have been well off the pace each year since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

With big personalities in Zlatan Ibrahimovic – at least for the time being - and Wayne Rooney now out of the picture, it’s time for a new United talisman to emerge and much will depend on the performances of big-money purchases Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

But their chances in this opening game could be threatened by a former Old Trafford hero, goal poacher Javier Hernandez who has joined West Ham this summer from Bayer Leverkusen.

‘Chicharito’ could be a very good bit of business by the Hammers at £14million and manager Slaven Bilic also looks to have bought well with the likes of mercurial winger Marko Arnautovic, reliable right-back Pablo Zabaleta and, of course, the latter’s on-loan former Manchester City team-mate, England goalkeeper Joe Hart.

United struggled many times at home last season, drawing no end of games they dominated, and this may not be a stroll against opponents who know what it takes not to leave this venue empty-handed.

Manchester United vs West Ham United stats
