These arch-rivals have cancelled each other out since Jose Mourinho became Manchester United manager and there has to be a real chance that it will happen again this weekend.

Mourinho’s containing tactics – or ‘park the bus’, if you like – have yielded three consecutive low-scoring draws against United’s bitter foes from along the M62 and East Lancashire Road, which run parallel between the North West of England’s two famous cities.

None of those matches was a particularly memorable contest, at least not for a high quality of football, and in terms of the spectacle, it is a worry that Liverpool have the greater need to win this game as they try to overhaul United for second position in the Premier League table – it could mean the hosts sit back again and play on the counter-attack.

As the stats above indicate, it is very much a clash between two teams with contrasting strengths as Jurgen Klopp’s visitors score freely on their travels whereas the Red Devils have based their impressive home record this term on solid defending.

But Mourinho must also be mindful that he cannot allow Liverpool to have too much of the ball as a pragmatic approach did not work against Manchester City earlier in the season and the Old Trafford faithful will want to see their side on the front foot, as in the second half against Chelsea recently when they turned a deficit into a 2-1 victory.

Better performances after the break have been a theme for United throughout the campaign and so if Liverpool are to come out on top, they may have to get ahead early and by a comfortable margin.

However, not a huge amount has changed over the last 17 months in terms of the way these rivals set up since they first met under their current managers and so we are backing the prevailing trend of head-to-head results to continue.
