Liverpool have a terrific recent Premier League record against Manchester City and are fancied to avoid defeat again by claiming a point at the Etihad Stadium.

Although it was City who got the better of the penalty shootout between these clubs in last season’s League Cup Final, it has otherwise been the Reds with the upper hand in this head-to-head of late and they can show once more that they are at their best when taking on the top clubs.

For City, of course, this match comes four days after what must go down as a shock elimination from the Champions League considering they took a two-goal advantage to Monaco.

The only realistic chance of silverware now for Pep Guardiola in his first season at the club is the FA Cup, for City could kick off on Sunday afternoon trailing league leaders Chelsea by 13 points.

The defensive solidity shown by the Blues as they kept five clean sheets out of seven before their trip to Monte Carlo deserted them on Wednesday and against a Liverpool team who are at their best going forward, this could be another testing 90 minutes for the City rearguard.

But similarly, it is easy to see the hosts scoring goals, not least because Jurgen Klopp’s side have not done enough to suggest they are in the sort of form to win a fixture as difficult as this away from home even though they have turned over Tottenham and Arsenal at Anfield recently.

Back-to-back defeats by two-goal margins at relegation-threatened duo Hull and Leicester highlight Liverpool’s limitations, not to mention their inconsistency which has been a feature of Klopp’s reign so far.

However, it is likely to be the stronger version of the Merseysiders that turns up here because they always raise their game against opponents who are also vying for places in the top four, and that makes us think Liverpool may not go home empty-handed.

Manchester City vs Liverpool stats

  • Liverpool have won five of the last six Premier League meetings between these clubs
  • Over 2.5 goals have been scored the last six times Manchester City have hosted Liverpool in the league
  • Liverpool have not won away from home in the league since Christmas
