Premier League action returns after the season’s second international break with a huge bang – and Liverpool will hope to do much better than in their last meeting with a Manchester club.

Those with the final say in fixture scheduling love to have a blockbuster as the first match back after an international hiatus these days, and they simply don’t come any bigger than this clash of fierce North West rivals.

It was a similar scenario back in September when Liverpool travelled to Manchester City after the two-week gap and were thrashed 5-0, that game turning on Sadio Mane’s controversial red card for a high boot that ended goalkeeper Ederson’s involvement with the score at 1-0.

Now it’s United who make the opposite journey of 30 miles or so, defending a record of six wins and one draw from their seven league matches this season and aiming to pull three points clear of their neighbours at the top of the table before City host Stoke in a 3pm kick-off.

A five-point gap has already built up between the Manchester duo and the rest with Liverpool seventh after a run of only one win in their last seven matches in all competitions, most recently a 1-1 draw away to Newcastle.

As usual in such situations, team selection will be fascinating with players arriving back from all over the globe and United look sure to be without Marouane Fellaini, two-goal hero of their latest win against Crystal Palace, due to a knee injury suffered on duty with Belgium.

Jurgen Klopp will hope there are no such setbacks with his Brazil duo Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho after their return from Sao Paulo, and that they, plus Mohamed Salah in the injury absence of Mane, can cause more problems for a United defence that has conceded only four goals in 10 matches in all competitions since the start of the Premier League season.

United have had the upper hand over their bitterest rivals in the last few years and while history shows that is likely to turn around at some point in the not-too-distant future, Jose Mourinho’s side are the stronger force just now and fancied to keep their excellent run going.

Liverpool vs Manchester United stats

  • Liverpool have not won any of the last six Premier League meetings between these clubs
  • Manchester United have conceded only one goal in their last three Premier League visits to Anfield
  • Under 2.5 goals have been scored in each of the last five meetings in all competitions
