Leicester already have one cup victory to their credit over Sheffield United this season but are expected to find it much harder work when they meet again on Friday.

In August, these clubs faced each other in the Carabao Cup second round at Bramall Lane where Leicester ran out 4-1 winners, all the goals scored after the break and three of them by players whom the Foxes have subsequently sent out on loan – Islam Slimani (two) and Ahmed Musa.

That was a third defeat in six games for Sheffield United at that early stage of the campaign but it may have been something of a watershed because they subsequently won 10 of their next 13, and they still find themselves with a chance of contesting the Championship play-offs this term.

Chris Wilder’s side are certainly enjoying a good season and they will go into this game on a high after winning 2-1 at home to Yorkshire rivals Leeds United on Saturday with a Billy Sharp double.

In contrast, Leicester’s form has taken a dip with only one point collected from their last three Premier League games and they will have been very disappointed to have suffered such an emphatic 5-1 thrashing at Manchester City last weekend.

Their defending was poor and goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel in particular had a day to forget so either Ben Hamer or Eldin Jakupovic, who have each played an FA Cup tie this season, could get a chance here to stake their claim to dislodge the Dane on a more permanent basis.

The Blades, meanwhile, have won both of their FA Cup games 1-0 against Championship rivals Ipswich (away) and Preston (home) and look worth backing to secure a replay at the very least.

Leicester City vs Sheffield United stats

  • This is the eighth FA Cup match between these clubs, Sheffield United having won three and Leicester two with two draws
  • The most recent of those ties was in the 1975-76 third round when Leicester won 3-0 at home
  • Both teams have scored, with over 2.5 goals in the match, in four of the last five meetings between these clubs at the King Power Stadium
