Kilmarnock vs Clyde predictions for their Betfred Scottish League Cup match at Rugby Park on Tuesday. Killie are aiming to bounce back from an opening defeat in this competition. Read on for our free predictions and betting tips.

Kilmarnock suffered a disappointing start to their League Cup campaign when they lost the Ayrshire derby last Friday but should get back on track against Clyde.

Killie’s opening group match away to local rivals Ayr United was chosen for TV coverage and moved to Friday night, but they went down 1-0 to a first-half goal from Andy Geggan.

That was a surprising defeat – we actually tipped the draw but covered our stake by backing under 2.5 goals at odds of 27/20 – because Ayr are two divisions below Kilmarnock. But Clyde are three tiers below their hosts and therefore Lee McCulloch’s side are red-hot favourites to get their first victory of the season on the board.

The League Cup was revamped last year to incorporate an earlier start and a round-robin phase, which includes 40 teams divided into eight groups of five.

The eight group winners and best four runners-up will go forward to the knockout stage and the round of 16, where they will be joined by the quartet of clubs who are, or were, representing Scotland in European competitions – Celtic, Aberdeen, Rangers and St Johnstone.

Kilmarnock are the only Premiership club in Group E and remain favourites to finish top of the pool despite Friday’s upset, while Clyde are in to 16/1 for top spot having started off with a 2-1 home victory over fellow League Two side Annan Athletic thanks to goals from Jack Breslin and former Dundee United, Aberdeen and Blackburn Rovers striker David Goodwillie.

With Barry Ferguson having resigned last season, Jim Chapman is now the Clyde manager and he will have been encouraged by the winning start. But with home advantage here, Kilmarnock should be too strong and are fancied to get their campaign up and running with a narrow success.

Kilmarnock vs Clyde stats

  • Both teams have scored in five of Clyde’s last six matches
