Hull City vs Watford betting tips

Everything points to a Hull victory here, but there could be some value in siding with a Watford team who are enjoying a better season than they are receiving credit for.

What cannot be escaped is that these two sides are much better on their own pitch than when travelling away from home, especially on recent form. Hull have lost only once at the KCOM Stadium since being beaten there by Stoke in October, while Watford have suffered four straight league and cup defeats to nil on the road.

Coupled with the fact the Tigers desperately need the points as they try to avoid relegation, those records have prompted the bookmakers to quote the hosts at odds-on.

But that may be doing a disservice to Watford who, largely unnoticed, have won their last three home matches to nil and now have a very realistic chance of finishing ‘best of the rest’, eighth in the table, albeit a long way behind the top seven.

Manager Walter Mazzarri’s future is still the subject of considerable speculation though, in the sense that media reports suggest he could suffer the same fate as his predecessor Quique Sanchez Flores at the end of the season in having his contract terminated despite having done a stellar job.

Refreshing the staff and playing squad year after year appears to be the modus operandi of the Hornets’ owners, yet it appears to be working and the team and Mazzarri deserve considerable praise for the position they have got themselves into this term.

They are 10 points ahead of Hull and while not the best of travellers, their results are not as lop-sided across the home and away columns as those of some Premier League clubs including this weekend’s opponents.

Backing a relegation-threatened team at odds-on is rarely the shrewdest bet and despite Hull’s solid home record, having the other two options running for us appeals more on this occasion with Watford entitled to be full of confidence after collecting nine points from the last 12.

Hull City vs Watford stats
