The 2017-2018 FA Cup journey begins shortly with the first round proper taking place in November and teams from the top two divisions joining in January - get our tips for the oldest club competition in the world here.

History of the FA Cup

After being conceived in 1871 The FA Cup is the oldest football competition in the world. The competition is open to all clubs from the top ten tiers of the English football pyramid, from the Premier League to non-league divisions as low as the Hellenic League Division One East and the Spartan South Midlands League Division One, with over 700 teams competing in the 2016/2017 edition of the tournament.

Played in a straight knock-out format, teams from non-league compete to enter the first round proper, which gets underway in November and is when teams from League One and League Two join, before teams from the Championship and Premier League join two rounds later.

The competition is looked upon fondly by fans from around the world due to the knock-out nature leading to many remarkable underdog stories and the trophy has become iconic for these moments, some of which in recent years have included giant-killings from clubs such as Lincoln City, Bradford City and on a larger scale Wigan Athletic who remarkably won the trophy whilst being relegated from the Premier League.

Fans of a certain vintage will remember giant-killings from years gone by and famous cup final moments, such as Sunderland's win over Leeds United in 1973 and Wimbledon overcoming Liverpool in 1988, memories that ensure this competition holds a special place in the heart of many supporters.

In recent yeras, many have claimed that the 'magic' of the competition has been diminishing somewhat, but there can be little doubt that the love of cup football still remains and romantic stories such as Lincoln's incredible run to the final eight stage last season shows that the FA Cup can still capture the imagination in the modern era.

FA Cup 2017/2018 Season Preview

After the 2017 FA Cup was won by Arsenal for the third time in four years, teams from around the country will be gearing up for a challenge of their own this year - but will it be one of the big boys getting their hands on the trophy again or will we see a more left-field candidate get their name on the famous trophy?

Arsenal will be among the contenders once again of course, but Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City are all stronger sides than the Gunners on paper right now, whilst their North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur are desperate to get their hands on some silverware under Mauricio Pochettino sooner rather than later.

There are several sides in the Premier League however who perhaps will see this competition as the ideal route to European competition. The likes of Southampton, West Ham United and Stoke City will be looking to add long-awaited silverware to their cabinets and all are capable of beating the top teams on their day.

Before that though, we have the early rounds to look forward to and after some terrific giantkillings last year including Sutton United's win over Leeds United and Lincoln City's incredible victories over Burnley and Ipswich Town. Who will provide the feel-good story from the lower leagues this time around?

FA Cup 2017/2018 Outright Odds

We may be a long way from learning who will lift the FA Cup in May 2018, but the bookies have already posted the FA Cup winner odds as fans across the country place bets on their side in the hope they'll be lifting the trophy.

Last year's runners up Chelsea are the current joint-favourites as the strongest team in England following last year's Premier League title win alongside a Manchester City side who are hoping to improve in Pep Guardiola's second season in charge at the Etihad Stadium.

The rest of the favourites are made up of the club's you would expect to be fighting it out at the top of the Premier League table this season, including last year's runners-up and FA Cup finalists Tottenham Hotspur and of course last year's winners Arsenal, who would make it four wins from five years if they were to get their hands on the trophy this time around.

Our Top 3 Bets

Looking for some FA Cup betting tips? Every round we will update this section with our Top 3 FA Cup betting tips for the relevant round. Prior to the competition getting underway in the first round proper in November however, we can only look at the outright market and give our outright tip which is as follows...

Manchester United to win the FA Cup in 2018 at 7/1 with William Hill

Jose Mourinho's first season at Manchester United was not without drama. The club struggled to compete for the title and ended up in a disappointing 6th place, but their performances in the cup competitions helped rescue the season as the Red Devils won both the EFL Cup and the Europa League as well as the Community Shield at the start of the season.

Although a top four finish will be expected as a minimum next season, we can see United struggling to compete for the title again this time around and as such, Mourinho may place the same importance on the cup competitions as he looks to add silverware to the cabinet and keep the fans at Old Trafford on his side.

The FA Cup seems to be a key tournament for the top clubs over the last few years and last season's semi-finalists included four of the top five teams in the Premier League. We expect a battle among the top sides again but Mourinho's experience and intelligence in the final stages of these cup competitions to help United battle through to the win.
